Grunge Fashion

The term “Grunge” is defined by Dictionary.com as ” A style or fashion derived from a movement in rock music: in fashion characterized by unkempt clothing and in music by aggressive nihilistic songs”

Grunge became popular in the 1980’s in the northwestern United States then it became globally known because of bands like Nirvana. While I’m not a fan of metal and hard rock, I grew up with people like punk pop princess Avril Lavigne and people like Evanescence and I really loved their style.

Grunge fashion wasn’t mentioned in the fashion industry until 1992. Marc Jacobs was probably the first to bring grunge fashion to the runway with his 1993 spring collection.

Grunge is typically seen as “non fashion”. It’s very uncoordinated, thoughtless, but with an edge. Over the years after the 80’s grunge has taken a backseat but it came back as the music became popular again.

Grunge teaches us not to become slaves to name brands and to be more self expressive through style. And I’m all about self expression, this is why I love Grunge fashion so much. I feel like I wear a lot of trends and different styles but grunge fashion is the real me.

Today, I want to show you all some grunge outfits that I styled.

Look 1

I love these bell bottom cargo pants, they’re very 90’s. The crop top is very grunge with the word “Misfits” emblazoned on the front, because I am a misfit. I always feel like I don’t really fit in with a lot of people. I added my favourite oversized denim jacket to keep me warm.

The top is sold out because it’s 2 years old but here’s an alternative https://www.forever21.com/ca/shop/catalog/product/f21/top_blouses/2000315688?lang=en-ca

Cargo pants, also sold out but find similar ones here https://www.forever21.com/ca/shop/Search/#brm-search?request_type=search&search_type=keyword&q=cargo%20pants&l=cargo%20pants

Look 2

For this second look I wore Denim shorts overalls with black stockings and a black turtleneck top. You’re probably wondering why I’m wearing overall shorts in winter, but the stockings provided warmth for my legs. I added my velvet combat boots to the look. And of course I wore my winter Jacket because we live in Canada, it’s always cold here.It looked really messy which is what grunge fashion is all about.

Look 3

You can’t be a grunge fashionista without plaid. It just won’t happen. For this look I wore a black dress with a red plaid shirt tied around my waist. The velvet combat boots added edginess.

Look 4

I would call this look Glam grunge. I’ve had this silver dress for awhile now but I’ve only worn it once out. It looks expensive right? But it only cost me $20 from H&M. I wore a black t shirt underneath to give it a grungy look. Who says you can’t look glam and grunge at the same time? Fashion is about breaking the rules.

Always be yourself whether you’re Grungy like me, or girly, or sporty chic or you don’t even have a name for your style. Style is about expressing yourself whatever that might be.

I Went Thrifting

I went thrifting on Saturday night. To be clear, this wasn’t my first time thrifting. I have done this maybe 5 years ago, and I was pleasantly surprised. Back then, I had found a really nice leather skirt and a red blazer and I really loved them. So what prompted me to go thrifting on Saturday? Well, this lady on Instagram named Netta started a Goodwill challenge and I was so inspired to go thrifting to see if I could find some nice pieces just like she had. Follow her Here

The thrift store that I went to is called Talize. I had been there many years before, but I wondered if they were still as good as they had been before. I also donated a few items from my closet.

To be honest it was really hard to find anything.I searched the whole store but I only found two things that I really liked. A faux fur coat and a blazer. I’ll show you the looks below.

The Faux Fur Coat

I was going to buy a brown faux fur coat, but I figured that everyone on instagram has brown teddy coats so let me get something different. It’s black and grey and cost $24.00. The price is reasonable compared to the prices of faux fur coats from Forever 21 and other stores which can go from $50- $150. This coat makes me feel rich. I felt like I had 5 million dollars in the bank. It’s a little oversized but that’s how I like my coats, it gives you room to add layers underneath if you want to. I wore it with my blue one shouldered dress from Zara and tall boots from Shoe-dazzle. This coat could be worn to a banquet or some elegant event and no one would know that it’s thrifted. Oh, the beauty of thrifting.

IMG_9925

The Blazer

This blazer is sort’ve a pinkish nude colour. I really liked that it was so different from all the blazers that I owned. I liked that it was long because I really like when blazers cover my butt. I just think I look better in long blazers ok? I liked the gold buttons on the front as well. The cost of this blazer was $9 but they had a sale where blazers were 50% off so I got it for $4.50. I would say that’s a good deal, wouldn’t you? I mean, where else can you go and find a blazer for $4.50? Nowhere. I paired the blazer with jeans and my trusty ankle boots. This look gives off elevated casual vibes.

IMG_9931.jpg

Conclusion

Thrifting has taught me that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to look good. You can go to a thrift store and find fashionable pieces for less. Also, you get to help the community by donating and giving back to the poor. This thrift store that I went to called Talize, they give back to the Children’s Wish Foundation. This foundation grants the wishes of Canadian children diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. So I’m happy that I went there.

Will I go back? I think I just might.

Break The Rules- Wearing White In Winter

Winter is always reserved for dark colours. Blacks, dark reds, and greys, but if you want to make a statement why not wear white? And yes, there’s this rule that you can’t wear white after labour day, I don’t know who made this weird rule but forget the rules. Fashion is all about having fun and taking risks. Lets break the rules together!

Today, I want to show you how I wear white in winter in 2 ways.

IMG_9560

The First Look – For this look I wore a white dress that I bought from Express.com this summer which I paired with a cream coloured Faux Fur Jacket that my best friend got me for my birthday. This Jacket is from Sirens and I absolutely love it. It’s so warm and cosy. The dress is really classy and the split at the front gives it a really sexy vibe. I wore my trusty black ankle boots to finish off the look. This is an elevated look that can be worn to church or to a fancy event. You can find similar faux fur  jackets Here. You can also find similar white dresses Here

IMG_9563IMG_9561

IMG_9568

2 The Second Look –  I wore tan coloured trousers and a white crop top, white sneakers and the same cream coloured faux fur jacket for this look. It was really relaxed and comfortable. I find that white always pairs well with tan or nude colours, so if you have a nude skirt, chances are that it will look great with a white shirt. You can shop similar trousers Here

IMG_9534

IMG_9539

IMG_9549

IMG_9535

I’ve never really worn white in winter or at all but now I’m just loving it. I’m tired of the same fashion rules. Try something different, whether it’s a small white piece or a full on white look. Will you make a statement this winter and stand out, or will you remain the same? As I always say, “You only live once”.

Break some fashion rules babes! I promise you won’t forget it! You can thank me later.

Do you wear white in fall or winter? Or do you stick to the same colour palette? Comment below.

The Best Types of Boots to Wear for Fall

The weather in Canada is always fluctuating. Just one day last week, it was 15 degrees, then the next day, it was hailing. Can you believe it?  Fall is so confusing. To wear layers or not to wear layers? To wear a heavy jacket or to wear a light jacket? Boots or sneakers?

Today, I want to discuss the best types of Boots to wear for Fall. I don’t wear sneakers during fall because I find that my feet get really cold. Does that happen to you? Or is it just me? Yes, so I only wear boots, to church, to work, to hang out with my friends. So lets’s discuss..

1 Combat boots- These are are my favourite types of boots to wear for fall. They are very functional and good for a busy lifestyle. You know, when you have to drop your kid off at school, or do a grocery run. The best thing thing about them, is that, they are so comfortable. The ones that I’m wearing in the picture below are velvet with coloured laces which give a punk rock vibe. And I love looking like a punk rock girl. The boots are from Forever 21, you can shop them Here

2 Ankle Boots – I wear these everywhere. Sometimes I don’t even care if they go with my outfit. I just love them. These are leather patented boots and they are great for fall. They are not too high and can be worn in the office or out on the town. These boots add a layer of sophistication to your outfit. They look like balenciaga sock boots right? These are from Justfab.com. They are probably 2 years old.

3 Tall Heeled Boots –  I bought these boots 2 years ago. The heels are very skinny but I needed something that could keep the cold away from my legs so I thought these would be the perfect fit. And they are! I mostly wear these to church and they keep my upper legs so warm! These are from Shoedazzle.com

IMG_9415cU3pcTiaRqquq1ug1UON+A

Boots are the best option for me for fall. I don’t know how I’d survive if I didn’t own them! The weather in Canada is brutal man! I wouldn’t encourage anyone to live here. Ha, I’m kidding. Canada is great!

Review: Clinique Stay Matte Oil – Free Makeup (Sample)

Everyone loves foundation! I mean, foundation is Everything! Who doesn’t love a good foundation that they can depend on, and use for years and years? Who doesn’t love quality foundation that meets their needs and matches their skin tones? I know, I do!

Today, I want to review Clinique Stay Matte Oil Free Makeup (Sample). I’ve never used the brand Clinique before, but I was excited to try this.

IMG_9318.jpg

First Impressions

I didn’t know what my shade was so I chose the shade golden because it looked close to my foundation shade that I would normally use. When I applied it to my skin it felt really thick.

IMG_9321

The Results

The foundation seemed to be medium coverage or light coverage because it didn’t cover up my spots when I applied it. And it also didn’t really blend well. Also, I think that the shade that I chose was a little too dark for my skin tone. It was a little dry too as well and it didn’t really cover up my pores.

The Verdict

I’m going to give this foundation a 3/5 stars. It didn’t blend well. Also the coverage was too light, it seemed like I would have to use a lot to cover my spots. And I NEED  to cover my spots, you know what I’m saying. It seemed like it was really matte though, which I give the brand thumbs up for. I mean, when you have oily skin matte foundations are key.  Also the price wasn’t too bad, on sephora.com it costs $35, which is way cheaper than most foundations that cost $42 and up.

These are just my thoughts though. Maybe you tried it and loved it, everyone’s skin is different and have different makeup needs.

Have you ever tried this foundation before? If so, what did you think of it? Comment below

Fall Fashion Trends You Won’t See Me Wearing

I’m a trend whore!  Yes I am. As soon as a new trend comes out, I’m on it like hot chocolate and milk. Like bread and butter. Get it? But ,there are certainly some trends that you won’t see me wearing! Unfortunately, not everything looks good on me OK?

AfterlightImage

This Fall season is about taking being noticed and fierce animal attraction. All across the runway I see Neons, Animal prints, snakeskin styles…. so much to choose from! Here’s a list of the trends that you most likely will never see me in

1. Neon –  This one is just not for me. The only bright colours that I like are red and yellow. I just can’t see myself in Neon green and neon pink. I hate attention and this would be too much. Imagine me in neon orange. Yeah, I can’t imagine that either.

AfterlightImage

2.Animal print – Animal print is all over. I mean, every time I sign into instagram I see some influencer in animal print. It looks great on them but I can’t see myself in head to toe animal print. In fact, I don’t really like prints in general. Maybe I’d consider wearing an animal print bag or even a scarf. Little things you know?

Animal Prints

AfterlightImage

3.Clueless Plaid – This trend looks really cool but too many bright colours for me. It’s just not my taste. I prefer normal plaids like red or green.

Clueless Plaid

AfterlightImage

These are the trends that you will never see me in. I mean maybe one day I’ll change my mind but for now I don’t see myself in these things.

Never say Never they say.

Disclaimer : All these are my words and I’m just being honest. Some photos were taken from google and are labelled as such.

What did you think of this post? Have you tired any of these trends?

Review : Becca Skin Love Weightless Blur Foundation

Foundation is the one thing that I can’t live without. Put me on an island with other cosmetics and I’ll always choose foundation. A girl’s gotta cover up her spots, you know what I’m saying?

Today, I want to review the Becca  Skin Love Weightless Blur  Foundation. This is a breathable, medium coverage liquid foundation with a buildable finish that enhances the natural beauty of your skin, this is what the package states.

fullsizeoutput_208d

First Impressions

I decided to use the shade Maple because it seemed similar to the shade that I used with my regular foundation by Fenty Beauty.

LDqsMbVZTyCJSnE3H+W51Q

1.So first thing, I really liked that it covered my spots. I didn’t have to use a lot of foundation to cover up. I really liked this, because with so many other foundations you have to use so much to cover everything.

2. It went on smoothly, I didn’t really have to blend it out too much.

IMG_8734

After an Hour

After an hour, I checked back on my skin. I noticed that the foundation didn’t move. There was no oil dripping off my skin or anything.

The Downside

After the hour, I noticed that the foundation started flaking. It didn’t really look natural or feel breathable. It felt heavy on my skin.

The Verdict

I’m going to give this foundation a 3.5/5 stars. I liked the coverage the best and I liked that it went on smoothly. But after the hour it looked patchy and just ugly. It retails for $53 on Sephora.com. Would I spend that much money on this foundation? No, I don’t think it’s worth the price and the bottle looks really small for the price.

Yes, so this was my review of this foundation. What did you think of this post? Do you use this foundation? What did you think of it?

How Blogging Has Helped Me With my Wardrobe

Blogging is one of my favourite  creative outlets. I’ve been thinking about starting a blog but I didn’t know where to start but I did my research and here I am today. It’s been a fun ride of strategizing and figuring things out and I’m still learning everyday but I’m happy that I started.

Today, I’ll be sharing the ways blogging has helped me with my wardrobe in the last 6 months.

AfterlightImage

These are the ways that blogging has helped me with my wardrobe in the last 6 months

1 I’ve learned to utilize the clothes in my closet – Look, if I was rich I’d buy clothes all the time, but I’m not rich OK? Blogging has helped me really search and make use of the clothes in my closet. Now I feel like I’m a stylist or something because I’m so good at putting together outfits now. I just use the clothes in my closet and make them fashionable! And I save that way.

AfterlightImage

2 I think I became more stylish – I was always into fashion, but now I feel like my outfits are more elevated. Now, I feel like they are more put together and thought out. It makes me feel like I’m just coming off the runway.AfterlightImage

3 I’m more organized now – I’m the least organized person, but blogging has gotten me colour coordinating my closet and all that. I have to stay organized so that I can find my outfits. All my jeans are in one place now, where I can find them. My life is easy now.

AfterlightImage

4 It’s helped me figure out what fits and what has to go – On a weekly basis I take maybe 50 photos to post throughout the week. Blogging has helped me figure out what clothes look good on me and what has to go. I mean, the pictures show everything and I mean Everything. So now my closet isn’t piled up with clothes that don’t look good or don’t fit me anymore. Thanks blogging.

Yes, so these are all the ways that blogging has helped me improve my wardrobe. Going into this I didn’t think that I would learn so much in 6 months,  but I’m happy for the lessons. Blogging is hard work, but I enjoy it.

My dress is from Zara, you can shop it Here

My Favourite Stores to Shop At And Why

” You only shop at 3 stores in the mall, what?”, my brother asks in disbelief. Yes, I only shop at like 3 stores. I don’t know, I’m just hard to please. You know what I’m saying? It’s taken me a long time to figure out what I like, but I think I’ve finally found what I really like…. Keep Reading…

fullsizeoutput_1c0e

Everyone probably likes these stores but here they are….

1 Zara – Look Zara just gets me, or I get Zara? I don’t know but it’s my favourite store. I like that the pieces are so elegant and fashionable. Every time I wear something from Zara, I feel like I’m on the runway. I can find pieces for church, or a casual day out. I know some people have said that Zara is very expensive and yes some items are but you can find affordable items for 20$ and even less. You just gave to search.

fullsizeoutput_1c6a

2 Forever 21 – I like Forever 21 because they always have lots of different styles of jeans. Yes, jeans! I love jeans ok? I have like 20 pairs of jeans and most of them are from Forever21. They also have really cute summer clothes

fullsizeoutput_1c38

3 H&M – This store is a good place to find work outfits. They sell a lot of blazers and dress pants for affordable prices

AfterlightImage

Justfab – I love buying all my shoes from Justfab. They have so many styles!

I love these stores the most. They just have the types of clothes that I love to wear. Do I shop at other stores sometimes? Yes, but I always come back to these ones. They’re my favourite ok? Will I ever find new favourite stores, yes I just have to keep looking.

My blazer is from Forever 21, it’s really long so I wore it as a dress. I bought it about a year ago so they don’t have that olive colour anymore but they have it in cream. You can shop it Here

How to Incorporate Colour Into your Wardrobe

I don’t like wearing bright colours. Surprise! Haha, black is my favourite colour (Yes, I know black is a shade but I’d rather call it a colour, sue me). Recently though, I find that wearing bright  colours is sorta nice? It spices things up. It makes you stand out.  And I sorta kinda don’t completely hate the idea anymore. People change OK? Keep reading to find out how I incorporate colour into my wardrobe.….

AfterlightImage

It’s summer and I like to feel girly and airy. Summer is the time to definitely put your black and grey clothes in a suitcase  far away. I mean, I want to reflect feelings of joy and happiness so this summer especially, I wore a lot of yellows and reds. People definitely took notice. Here’s how you can do the same.

Wear a Bright Coloured Blazer – This blazer is about 2 years old. At first I didn’t want to purchase it but I was tired of wearing black all the time. The first time I wore it I got so many compliments. This can be worn as a dress or with trousers.

fullsizeoutput_19f0

Get a different coloured purse from your Outfit – Girls, you don’t always have to match everything. Your dress doesn’t have to match your shoes and purse. Style is all about taking risks. So if you’re wearing a blue dress you can wear a yellow purse.

fullsizeoutput_19f3

Try wearing bright Shades – I didn’t start getting into this trend until I saw Rihanna doing it in her wild thoughts music video. I was like “Yeah that looks so high fashion, let me go buy some pink shades”. I looked so bomb.

fullsizeoutput_19f2

Throw on bright sandals – This perks up your everyday work wear. Aldo has a great collection of colours  for those days when you want to spice things up.

fullsizeoutput_19f1

Yes, so those are some of the ways in which I incorporate colour into my wardrobe. Sometimes I feel weird because as I mentioned above I like wearing black but I figured that nothing great ever happened to anyone who stayed stuck in the comfort zone.

So break out. Break the rules.  Break free.

Try something new.
