Grunge Fashion

The term “Grunge” is defined by Dictionary.com as ” A style or fashion derived from a movement in rock music: in fashion characterized by unkempt clothing and in music by aggressive nihilistic songs”

Grunge became popular in the 1980’s in the northwestern United States then it became globally known because of bands like Nirvana. While I’m not a fan of metal and hard rock, I grew up with people like punk pop princess Avril Lavigne and people like Evanescence and I really loved their style.

Grunge fashion wasn’t mentioned in the fashion industry until 1992. Marc Jacobs was probably the first to bring grunge fashion to the runway with his 1993 spring collection.

Grunge is typically seen as “non fashion”. It’s very uncoordinated, thoughtless, but with an edge. Over the years after the 80’s grunge has taken a backseat but it came back as the music became popular again.

Grunge teaches us not to become slaves to name brands and to be more self expressive through style. And I’m all about self expression, this is why I love Grunge fashion so much. I feel like I wear a lot of trends and different styles but grunge fashion is the real me.

Today, I want to show you all some grunge outfits that I styled.

Look 1

I love these bell bottom cargo pants, they’re very 90’s. The crop top is very grunge with the word “Misfits” emblazoned on the front, because I am a misfit. I always feel like I don’t really fit in with a lot of people. I added my favourite oversized denim jacket to keep me warm.

The top is sold out because it’s 2 years old but here’s an alternative https://www.forever21.com/ca/shop/catalog/product/f21/top_blouses/2000315688?lang=en-ca

Cargo pants, also sold out but find similar ones here https://www.forever21.com/ca/shop/Search/#brm-search?request_type=search&search_type=keyword&q=cargo%20pants&l=cargo%20pants

Look 2

For this second look I wore Denim shorts overalls with black stockings and a black turtleneck top. You’re probably wondering why I’m wearing overall shorts in winter, but the stockings provided warmth for my legs. I added my velvet combat boots to the look. And of course I wore my winter Jacket because we live in Canada, it’s always cold here.It looked really messy which is what grunge fashion is all about.

Look 3

You can’t be a grunge fashionista without plaid. It just won’t happen. For this look I wore a black dress with a red plaid shirt tied around my waist. The velvet combat boots added edginess.

Look 4

I would call this look Glam grunge. I’ve had this silver dress for awhile now but I’ve only worn it once out. It looks expensive right? But it only cost me $20 from H&M. I wore a black t shirt underneath to give it a grungy look. Who says you can’t look glam and grunge at the same time? Fashion is about breaking the rules.

Always be yourself whether you’re Grungy like me, or girly, or sporty chic or you don’t even have a name for your style. Style is about expressing yourself whatever that might be.

EXPRESS YOURSELF GIRL/ BOY!

Break The Rules- Wearing White In Winter

Winter is always reserved for dark colours. Blacks, dark reds, and greys, but if you want to make a statement why not wear white? And yes, there’s this rule that you can’t wear white after labour day, I don’t know who made this weird rule but forget the rules. Fashion is all about having fun and taking risks. Lets break the rules together!

Today, I want to show you how I wear white in winter in 2 ways.

IMG_9560

The First Look – For this look I wore a white dress that I bought from Express.com this summer which I paired with a cream coloured Faux Fur Jacket that my best friend got me for my birthday. This Jacket is from Sirens and I absolutely love it. It’s so warm and cosy. The dress is really classy and the split at the front gives it a really sexy vibe. I wore my trusty black ankle boots to finish off the look. This is an elevated look that can be worn to church or to a fancy event. You can find similar faux fur  jackets Here. You can also find similar white dresses Here

IMG_9563IMG_9561

IMG_9568

2 The Second Look –  I wore tan coloured trousers and a white crop top, white sneakers and the same cream coloured faux fur jacket for this look. It was really relaxed and comfortable. I find that white always pairs well with tan or nude colours, so if you have a nude skirt, chances are that it will look great with a white shirt. You can shop similar trousers Here

IMG_9534

IMG_9539

IMG_9549

IMG_9535

I’ve never really worn white in winter or at all but now I’m just loving it. I’m tired of the same fashion rules. Try something different, whether it’s a small white piece or a full on white look. Will you make a statement this winter and stand out, or will you remain the same? As I always say, “You only live once”.

Break some fashion rules babes! I promise you won’t forget it! You can thank me later.

Do you wear white in fall or winter? Or do you stick to the same colour palette? Comment below.

The Best Types of Boots to Wear for Fall

The weather in Canada is always fluctuating. Just one day last week, it was 15 degrees, then the next day, it was hailing. Can you believe it?  Fall is so confusing. To wear layers or not to wear layers? To wear a heavy jacket or to wear a light jacket? Boots or sneakers?

Today, I want to discuss the best types of Boots to wear for Fall. I don’t wear sneakers during fall because I find that my feet get really cold. Does that happen to you? Or is it just me? Yes, so I only wear boots, to church, to work, to hang out with my friends. So lets’s discuss..

1 Combat boots- These are are my favourite types of boots to wear for fall. They are very functional and good for a busy lifestyle. You know, when you have to drop your kid off at school, or do a grocery run. The best thing thing about them, is that, they are so comfortable. The ones that I’m wearing in the picture below are velvet with coloured laces which give a punk rock vibe. And I love looking like a punk rock girl. The boots are from Forever 21, you can shop them Here

IMG_9431

IMG_9373

2 Ankle Boots – I wear these everywhere. Sometimes I don’t even care if they go with my outfit. I just love them. These are leather patented boots and they are great for fall. They are not too high and can be worn in the office or out on the town. These boots add a layer of sophistication to your outfit. They look like balenciaga sock boots right? These are from Justfab.com. They are probably 2 years old.

3 Tall Heeled Boots –  I bought these boots 2 years ago. The heels are very skinny but I needed something that could keep the cold away from my legs so I thought these would be the perfect fit. And they are! I mostly wear these to church and they keep my upper legs so warm! These are from Shoedazzle.com

IMG_9415cU3pcTiaRqquq1ug1UON+A

Boots are the best option for me for fall. I don’t know how I’d survive if I didn’t own them! The weather in Canada is brutal man! I wouldn’t encourage anyone to live here. Ha, I’m kidding. Canada is great!

What types of boots do you like to wear? Comment below.

How I take my Outfit Photos

AfterlightImageHey guys! Welcome back to my blog! I was supposed to post on Sunday but I was just enjoying the last day of summer. I went to 2 BBQS in one day! I had so much fun!

Today, I want to touch on How I take my Blog photos.

As I look at the newest Vogue Magazine cover and look at people like Bella Hadid posing, I wonder, “How the hell do you look this good?”. And then I go cry in my room. I’m kidding, but in the last 6 months since starting this blog I finally feel like I know how to take my blog photos! Finally!

AfterlightImage

So how do I take my Outfit photos for my blog? How do I pose? Keep reading….

1 Find Someone who you’re comfortable with – Look I’m not saying that I can’t work with someone that I’m not comfortable with but at the beginning of starting this blog I started with someone who I wasn’t comfortable with and it showed in my photos. I’m not blaming the person but I needed direction and I wasn’t really getting that. I’m grateful that they wanted to help me. I wanted tips like “Turn your head this way, or that looks better”. I didn’t get that. And again I’m not blaming the person but I think I was just trying to figure it out. I mean, it doesn’t make sense to take 50 photos but only like one out of the bunch. Now, my mom takes my photos and I feel very comfortable and I also use my tripod as well and I can actually see how I’m posing.

AfterlightImage

2 Find somewhere to place your hands – This was hard for me at the beginning. My hands are really long OK? I never really know where to place them. One day, my best friend came over and gave me some tips. She said, “Just find somewhere to place your hands other than your side”. From then on I started placing  them in my hair, on my knees etc.

AfterlightImage

3 Know your Angles –  For me the left side of my face is my good side. When posing for the camera I mostly  turn my head to the left side. It just works visually better for me. Also holding the camera high, it makes you look skinnier. Whenever my mom takes my photos I always remind her to hold the camera up. Sometimes she gets annoyed HAHA but I love my mom.

AfterlightImage

4 Look at how other people pose – I got tired of the way how I posed, so I saw an Article on Who What Wear that literally said, “New Poses You Should Try’, and I was like God, is this you? I studied how the people posed, and I decided to try that bending down one that all the insta models do a couple of weeks ago  and I really liked the result. Yes, not every pose works for everyone but test out which ones work.

AfterlightImage

5 Practice facial expressions in the mirror – When I’m too serious my photos don’t look great so I find that smiling or smirking works best. Looking away from the camera also gives a good vibe as if you’re reflecting on something.

AfterlightImage

6 Lighting is Everything – Whether you’re taking your photos inside, or outside, lighting matters. In the summertime, I like to take my photos in the mornings at 9am on Sundays. Early mornings are when the sun is brightest. I wake up at 8, get dressed  apply my makeup and take my photos. When I’m indoors I turn my room light on and I also have another light that I put beside my tripod that helps my photos look bright.

Yes, so these are the things that I’ve learned in the 6 months that I’ve been blogging. Am I an expert? No, but this is my personal experience and I’m still learning everyday. I’m also finally getting more  comfortable in front of the camera. It’s taken me 6 months can you believe it? But everything takes time, even Bella Hadid said it the other day in an interview that she’s just now learning her angles, and she’s been modelling for awhile now.

The moral of this story? Things take time and that’s OK.

My dress is from Zara, I bought it 2 years ago so I don’t think they have it anymore but you can find similar ones Here

How to Incorporate Colour Into your Wardrobe

I don’t like wearing bright colours. Surprise! Haha, black is my favourite colour (Yes, I know black is a shade but I’d rather call it a colour, sue me). Recently though, I find that wearing bright  colours is sorta nice? It spices things up. It makes you stand out.  And I sorta kinda don’t completely hate the idea anymore. People change OK? Keep reading to find out how I incorporate colour into my wardrobe.….

AfterlightImage

It’s summer and I like to feel girly and airy. Summer is the time to definitely put your black and grey clothes in a suitcase  far away. I mean, I want to reflect feelings of joy and happiness so this summer especially, I wore a lot of yellows and reds. People definitely took notice. Here’s how you can do the same.

Wear a Bright Coloured Blazer – This blazer is about 2 years old. At first I didn’t want to purchase it but I was tired of wearing black all the time. The first time I wore it I got so many compliments. This can be worn as a dress or with trousers.

fullsizeoutput_19f0

Get a different coloured purse from your Outfit – Girls, you don’t always have to match everything. Your dress doesn’t have to match your shoes and purse. Style is all about taking risks. So if you’re wearing a blue dress you can wear a yellow purse.

fullsizeoutput_19f3

Try wearing bright Shades – I didn’t start getting into this trend until I saw Rihanna doing it in her wild thoughts music video. I was like “Yeah that looks so high fashion, let me go buy some pink shades”. I looked so bomb.

fullsizeoutput_19f2

Throw on bright sandals – This perks up your everyday work wear. Aldo has a great collection of colours  for those days when you want to spice things up.

fullsizeoutput_19f1

Yes, so those are some of the ways in which I incorporate colour into my wardrobe. Sometimes I feel weird because as I mentioned above I like wearing black but I figured that nothing great ever happened to anyone who stayed stuck in the comfort zone.

So break out. Break the rules.  Break free.

Try something new.

How to Transition from Summer to Autumn Fashion

Autumn is quickly approaching can you believe it? I know, I can’t believe it either! It makes me sad that summer is leaving us.  I know that some of you are excited for sweater weather but I’m not.Summer is my favourite season ok? With autumn coming it’s time to change things up!

AfterlightImage

Here are some tips on How to Transition from Summer to Autumn Fashion.

Layer, Layer, Layer– The best way to transition from summer to autumn is by layering. So if you have a sleeveless dress like I do in this picture it’s best to layer with a light coat or leather jacket to keep out the chill. Don’t go overboard though.I’ve had this coat for about 2 years now and whenever it’s chilly I just throw it over my outfits.

AfterlightImage

Wear Stilettos  And Boots Instead of Sandals – This is a no brainer, but when it starts to get cold I stop wearing my heeled sandals. I mean, do you like it when your toes are cold? Because I don’t.

AfterlightImage

Wear Neutral Colours– Autumn is about neutrals and dark colours. As the picture above I like to wear tans, browns, burgundy etc. I don’t really wear bright colours like yellow and green in Autumn. I mean, you can if you want to, it’s always good to break the rules. But I guess the dark colours go with the gloomy weather? Haha

AfterlightImage

Add tights to Dresses – Tights keep you warm in Autumn so stock up on them. Whenever I go to my local dollar store I always get 5 packs, so they can last a long time.

AfterlightImage

Wear Scarves – In Canada, it always gets really cold by October. A good way to combat this cold is by wearing a scarf. Last year, I purchased a really nice thick one from H&M, and I have no regrets.

IMG_7370

Yeah, so that’s how I transition from Summer to Autumn. I like Autumn Fashion but I prefer Summer. I just love the sun and I love letting my legs breathe.

I bought this dress years ago from H&M but you can find similar ones Here

I also bought this coat a couple years ago but here’s a similar one in the link Here

OOTD : Summer Essentials

Today’s Outfit, is one of my favourites ever, and I don’t really have favourites when it comes to outfits. I’m the type of person who likes to change things up frequently, so you’ll never really see me looking the same. This look brought me to think about my Summer Essentials, the items of clothing I can’t live without during the summer time. Keep reading……

AfterlightImage

These are my Essentials for the Summer …….

Platform Sandals – I bought these at the beginning of the summer and I must say that I really love them. I saw them in the Forever 21 and I immediately thought, “I have to get these”. They were just very different from the usual sandals and and liked that they had platforms. They are super comfortable as well. I wear these every time I go out. You can shop similar ones Here as it is sold out.

AfterlightImage

Off the Shoulder Tops – I was one of those people who were skeptical about off the shoulder tops when they first came out, because I have bigger boobs, but after I tried one, I was hooked. Now, I have different variations and colours. I don’t think I can go one summer day without an off the shoulder top. This top is also from Forever 21, you can find different variations Here

AfterlightImage

Light Washed Denim – I just really like light washed denim for the summer. First of all, it’s soft, and it’s just beautiful for those hot summer days. I don’t wear jeans pants in the summertime, because it’s so hot and I mean who wants jeans or leggings sticking on to their skin? Certainly not me, so I find alternatives like dresses and light washed denim overall shorts. I like when my legs get fresh air, you know what I’m saying? I love this one from Forever 21. I felt as if I could wear this to a carnival or a barbecue. You can shop it Here

AfterlightImage

Other outfit essentials that aren’t pictured – Sunglasses, Small cute colourful handbags.

This outfit wasn’t inspired by anyone really, but it’s not original, I’m sure someone has done this look before.I just wanted to wear something different because I’ve noticed myself  only wearing dresses. This outfit felt more hippie than my usual ones. but I loved the change. I received a lot of compliments in this look.

AfterlightImage

Hope you all have a great week! XOXO

I Decided To Dress Like Kim Kardashian For A Day

I love Kim Kardashian. Yeah, judge me, I don’t care. Whenever I watch the show, Kim always makes me laugh with her antics and I just love how she’s always there for her family. She kinda reminds me of myself in a way, and I love how driven she is. She’s actually my favourite out of all the Kardashians, aside from Kris Jenner and Kendall.

I’ve been watching Kim’s style throughout the years and yes, like everyone else, I really love some outfits, and then I really dislike others. This week I decided to dress like Kim Kardashian for a day. I’ve noticed Kim wearing , Biker Shorts and T- Shirts with sneakers a lot lately so I said, “Let me try this”. Mind you, I can’t afford Yeezy clothing or shoes, but I decided to work with what I had in my closet already.

This is how Kim usually looks in Biker shorts and T shirts

IMG_6786

fullsizeoutput_16c9.jpeg
Here she is dressing up her Biker shorts with heels and a Denim Jacket

And this is how I copied her look.

AfterlightImage

I wore this look to the mall and people looked at me strange. Their face said, “What the hell is she wearing?”, but did I care? Nah. I mean I dress for myself, not for people.

AfterlightImage

Kim sometimes dresses up this look with heels or a denim jacket but I wanted to go the more comfortable route with the sneakers.

AfterlightImage

My friend saw me in this outfit and she said that I looked like a homeless person. Yeah I know that’s what people say when they see Kim in this outfit going out too but honestly I didn’t let that stop me.

AfterlightImageAfterlightImage.jpg

In conclusion, I’ll be wearing more Biker Shorts and T shirts till summer ends, whether I’m going to the mall or out with my friends. I don’t care if I look like a homeless person, or, a hobo. The best thing about this outfit? It’s really really comfortable. You know what I’m saying? And I LOVE things that feel comfortable. It felt really simple, like I was just wearing jeans and T shirt. The material of the biker shorts felt really soft and the T shirt was large and just really comfortable. This is athleisure that I can actually see myself wearing everyday. Throw out sweatpants and give me these! I can see why Kim Kardashian loves wearing them so much, they’re the best!

Btw, Kim, can we be best friends  now? Can I be apart of your squad?Haha, if only.

My Top is from Zara but it’s sold out but you can find T shirts Here

What to Wear When You’re A Lazy Dresser Like Me

If you’re like me, putting too much effort into matching your skirt with your top, or into looking stylish for that matter,  can be exhausting! Don’t get me wrong, I love fashion and I think that effort should be made, in regards to how you look, but why does it have to be so complicated? It could be so easy. Instead of spending 1 hour trying to piece a look together why not just spend 20 mins?

fullsizeoutput_1539

Listen, I don’t want or need to spend an hr on my outfit, when I could be using that time for something else, like putting on my makeup. Where am I going to that I need to spend hours coming up with an outfit? Am I going to be meeting with the Queen of England?

I’m fashionable, but I’m a really lazy, so here are some ideas of What to Wear When You’re a Lazy Dresser like Me

Wear Dresses – Wearing a dress is my go to. I just pop on a dress and I’m ready to go in no time. No stress, no hassle. It can be a T- Shirt dress, shirt dress etc.

IMG_6465

Bike Shorts and A T- Shirt – I love wearing this combination these days. Whenever I need to run an errand I just throw on a bike shorts and a T shirt and I’m out of the house. So easy and simple.

IMG_6462

Jumpsuits – Jumpsuits are the laziest outfits ever! There’s no fuss, throw on a jumpsuit with a pair of heels and you’re good to get going.

IMG_6463

Jeans and a T- Shirt – Who doesn’t love a good jeans and T- Shirt outfit? This is just for when you really can’t be bothered

IMG_6464

A Faux Fur Vest and a Dress – As seen above this is the laziest outfit ever. It doesn’t take much effort but don’t I look fabulous?

The point of this post isn’t to bash anyone. I’m just showing that fashion and style doesn’t have to take you hours. It can be simple and really easy.

For someone who is as lazy as I am, the options above work really well.

Why make it complicated when it could all be so easy? You know what I’m saying?

Dress – My dress was 20$ from H&M but I bought it like 2 years ago. You can find similar ones Here

Faux Fur Vest – The exact one that I have is sold out as I bought it 2 years ago but you can find similar ones Here

Do you take hours to put an outfit together or are you a lazy dresser like me? Comment below. I wanna hear your thoughts

Have a fabulous week my darlings! XOXO

Tips to Look More Fashionable

Have you ever looked into the mirror and thought, “Hmm my fashion needs work” or, “Maybe I should tweak my style a little?”. Well, I think this happens to most of us. Fashion can be tough sometimes, but not impossible to master. It’s not math Y’all, (Let’s see the hands of those who hate math and think it’s difficult Aka me). Looking fashionable, is not all about buying the most expensive Versace pieces or wearing the latest trends, it can be very simple, easy and affordable.fullsizeoutput_1387Here are some Tips that have helped me through the years to look more fashionable.

  1. Try something new – Yes, if you’re tired of looking the same all the time, the answer? Try something new. No, I’m not saying you should completely go out of your comfort zone, but try something new that you’re comfortable with. So if you’re someone who constantly likes to wear black maybe try wearing bright blue for a change? Change is always good. Start small and work your way up.fullsizeoutput_1386
  2. Wear Sunglasses – I find that adding sunglasses to any outfit just makes it pop and look 10 times more fashionable. Wearing sunglasses with my outfits makes me feel like I’m some rich lady who has her shit together and can conquer the world.fullsizeoutput_1385
  3. Wear a shoe that doesn’t match – I know you queens, like to match your red top with your red jeans, and your red shoes but sometimes, it’s good to switch things up. Pair your green dress with your purple shoes. You’ll instantly look more fashionable and chic. In these pictures I’m wearing  snake skin mules with a lavender dress which Clearly don’t match but I love it.fullsizeoutput_1389
  4. Wear your Jacket on your shoulders – I remember the first time I tried this and people were staring at me. Haha, that’s how you grab people’s attention. It’s like you’re wearing a cape but not really.fullsizeoutput_1388
  5. Wear your cross body bag in front – I find myself doing it a lot more these days. It just showcases the bag more and since my blue bag is my favourite, I find that I want to show it off more. I find that this makes me look more high fashion.

Other tips include :Playing around with sizes – Sometimes I like to wear oversized clothing whether it be a top or jeans. It just goes with a tomboyish vibe that I might be having that day and just makes me look super chicCheck your closet – It’s good to always peruse your closet. That dress that you had when you were 16? Maybe it’s time to get rid of it Susan. Don’t be a hoarder. Ask yourself “Do I really need this or even wear this? If the answer is “No”, get rid of it.If you think your style is fine then there’s no need to update it. These are just tips that have helped me in my personal life. You can follow them, or not, it’s up to you really. It seems like the dress that I bought, is sold out but you can shop a similar one HereWhat other tips are there out there that can help someone become more fashionable?
